To use a practical example, a standard lithium-ion battery that powers your cell phone is a much better choice for that specific application than a supercapacitor because a li-ion battery can provide a full day of power for a cell phone and charge throughout the night. So, what's a good real-life example for a supercapacitor use case?
Batteries provide high energy density. Supercapacitors have lower energy density than batteries, but high power density because they can be discharged almost instantaneously. The electrochemical processes in a battery take more time to deliver energy to a load. Both devices have features that fit specific energy storage needs (Figure 1).
Individual supercapacitors are limited to 2.5 V (P Series reaches 5 V using two supercapacitors in series). As many applications require higher voltages, supercapacitors can be configured in series to increase the working voltage.
It then reviews some typical applications, standalone and in combination with batteries. Supercapacitors from Eaton are used for illustrative purposes. A supercapacitor is an energy storage device with unusually high specific power capacity compared to electrochemical storage devices like batteries.
Eaton offers a complete line of reliable supercapacitors for energy storage applications requiring high power density and fast charging. Its supercapacitors' physical packaging sometimes matches that of batteries, especially coin cells. They are also available in conventional capacitor cylindrical packages (Figure 2).
If a series resistor is used, ensure that the voltage outputs of the supercapacitor are connected directly to the application and not through the resistor, otherwise the low impedance of the supercapacitor will be nullified. Many battery systems exhibit decreased lifetime when exposed to high current discharge pulses.
