However, the demand for ES capacity to enhance the peak shaving and frequency regulation capability of power systems with high penetration of RE has not been clarified at present. In this context, this study provides an approach to analyzing the ES demand capacity for peak shaving and frequency regulation.
4.2.1. Energy storage power correction During peaking, ES will continuously absorb or release a large amount of electric energy. The impact of the ESED on the determination of ES capacity is more obvious. Based on this feature, we established the ES peaking power correction model with the objective of minimizing the ESED and OCGR.
The power station is constructed and operated by Dalian Constant Current Energy Storage Power Station Co., Ltd. and the battery system is designed and manufactured by Dalian Rongke Energy Storage Technology Development Co., Ltd.
Due to the cost of deep peaking of conventional units, the system needs a larger charging power provided by ES to participate in peak shaving when the power of RE is larger (e.g. Fig. 7 (Typical day 3 0:00 to 8:00 p.m.)). In this way, the charge and discharge of ES involved in peak shaving may be unbalanced.
Taking the 49.5% RE penetration system as an example, the power and capacity of the ES peaking demand at a 90% confidence level are 1358 MW and 4122 MWh, respectively, while the power and capacity of the ES frequency regulation demand are 478 MW and 47 MWh, respectively.
The project is the first national large-scale chemical energy storage demonstration project approved by the National Energy Administration of China, with a total construction scale of 200MW/800MWh. The grid connection is the first phase project of the power station, with a scale of 100MW/400MWh.
