Sofia Offshore Wind Farm is one of the four Dogger Bank projects that were awarded consent in 2015. Formerly known as Dogger Bank Teesside B, the entire project was taken over by innogy (now RWE) in August 2017 and subsequently renamed Sofia Offshore Wind Farm.
Central to this project is the onshore converter station, which converts the energy harnessed from the North Sea winds into the electricity that powers our homes and businesses. The arrival of the transformers at Sofia’s onshore converter station marks a major milestone. Watch this terrific video to learn more about this exciting phase.
So far at Sofia, more than half of the offshore turbine foundations have been installed, the offshore converter station, onshore substation, and onshore and offshore export cables are also in place, in preparation for first generation later this year.
The power produced by Sofia will be transmitted by offshore cables that arrive on land at a site between Redcar and Marske-by-the-Sea. Each offshore cable connects to an onshore buried cable that runs seven kilometres to a new converter station, currently approaching completion on a site adjacent to the Wilton Complex.
Energy Minister Michael Shanks said: “It is great to see this exciting milestone reached for the Sofia offshore wind farm. Today takes us a step closer to achieving our mission for clean power by 2030, with over a million homes expected to be powered by the cutting-edge turbines of Sofia wind farm.

Standardized plug-and-play designs have reduced installation costs from $80/kWh to $45/kWh since 2023. Smart integration features now allow multiple containers to operate as coordinated virtual power plants, increasing revenue potential by 25% through peak shaving and grid services. Safety innovations including multi-stage fire suppression and gas detection systems have reduced insurance premiums by 30% for container-based projects. New modular designs enable capacity expansion through simple container additions at just $210/kWh for incremental capacity.
