A total of 5,275 standalone 5G base stations have been activated in Brazil – double the minimum commitment. This represents 6% of the overall 93,159 base stations in the country. By 2025, 6,370 5G base stations must be installed in the state capitals. In total, the state capitals are home to nearly a quarter of the Brazilian population.
In data collected between July 2022 and June 2024, China was reported to have had around 3.5 million 5G base stations installed across the country, with Chinese mobile operators investing heavily in 5G infrastructure. By comparison, the European Union had around 460,000 thousand base stations, while the United States had approximately 175,000.
This brings the total number of municipalities with 5G coverage to 3,678, covering approximately 181.3 million Brazilians, or roughly 85 percent of the population. 5G is the fifth-generation technology standard for mobile and broadband networks, succeeding 4G connectivity networks.
Three-and-a-half years after receiving its 5G licenses, Vivo —Brazil’s largest mobile operator by subscriptions—can claim the country’s most extensive 5G subscription base. As of May 2025 (the most recent official data available), there were approximately 19.2 million users connected to its 5G Standalone network.
